9:00 am – 9:10 am:
Introductions, discussion of goals, and Ice breaker:
what do YOU want to get out of the day? Topic introduction, Overview; Thesis (what it is that we
want to accomplish)

9:10am – 10:30am
Defining the role and impact that male privilege and Domestic
Violence has played historically and in today’s culture:
Review of research, exploring
characteristics of Batterers; Overview of the Power & Control Wheel; The impact that DV has on
the victims (particularly children). Thought patterns/distortion, i.e., belief of self as victim, etc.
Developmental history/life experience of the batterer. Cultural beliefs/behaviors and life styles
that support and contribute to the perpetuation of the life style of Power and Control.

10:30am – 10:45am Break

10:45 am – 12:15 am:
Batterers Characteristics, Modalities, Presentations and
Addressing the “Noble Victim”:
Themes behind the group work, the importance of the
Batterers self-reflection in a peer group setting. The challenges to avoid moralizing and
shaming. Client self-motivation for change.

12:15 am – 1:15 pm: Lunch

1:15 pm – 2:45 pm:
Lethality Assessments; Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence,
Obfuscation:
Explore the emotional impact of trauma on the growth, development. The Impact
a batterer has on the psyche when using whichever tools work for power and control. The
objective of Power and Control is to get things “My” way. Assessing for lethality, differentiating
needs related to Substance Abuse and recognition that Substance Abuse is a separate issue.

2:45 pm –3:00 pm Break

3:00 pm – 4:30 pm:
“Treatment Considerations and approaches”: Where do we go from
here? Treatment options, ideas, de-escalation skills. Tools of the trade.
